Abstract
Water as an important resource for the Citril Finch Carduelis citrinella. For species living in arid regions and those exposed to long drought periods, access to water is critical. Climatic data and observations in Spain and the Swiss Jura Mountains show how water resources influence the choice of breeding habitats of Citril Finch Carduelis citrinella even in areas with high precipitation. Citril Finches visit water points also outside dry periods as in early spring in the first hour of the morning and discover even smallest water sources. The birds then often become aggressive and utter calls that are apparently only used when fighting for access to water. They visit the same sites for decades even when offered little water and for a short time only, thereby revealing a marked capacity for learning and remembering. In addition to the already high respiratory water loss typical for small birds, the water requirement is probably due to the predominant seed consumption and salt intake. As a mountain bird, Citril Finches avoid high temperatures. Global warming with its increased water shortage in summer probably affects its food supply. Evidently, access to water is important for characterizing the habitat and regional distribution of this species.
