Abstract
The Rock Bunting Emberiza cia in Southwest Switzerland: from hot rock steppes to rough high mountains. Rock Bunting occurrence was investigated in typical habitats in canton Valais (Switzerland). These habitats are southward-facing, steep, rocky areas often with dry, lawn like vegetation structures. The Rock Bunting populations were always clustered and small-sized. Despite intensive searching, even using a tape-recorded decoy as a lure, it was found that areas peripheral to the inhabited foci were not populated. This distribution matched the limited available sun-catching characteristics due to the topography of the steep rocky hillsides. The habitats enclosed dry lawn vegetation with a sporadic bush and tree inventory. The earliest possible emergence of insects as a food basis for the first offspring seemed to be a very important prerequisite for colonization. At Savièse near Sion, as well as in the dry rock steppes near Leuk, in forest areas destroyed by fire near Albinen and areas at higher altitudes near Evolène and Blatten (about 1600 m) small clustered populations of 7–11 territorial Rock Buntings were found. The Rock Bunting, well known as an inhabitant of warm and hot Mediterranean areas, surprisingly populates even high mountain regions, characterized by cold, fog, rain and storm. The respective populations colonizing lower and higher locations did not differ genetically, as the analysis of nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome-b sequences revealed, indicating that this specialization is rather recent.
