Abstract
Extraordinary high breeding success of Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus in the Austrian Rhine Valley. In 2010 we recorded a total of 88 breeding pairs and 177 fledglings of Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus in our study area of about 10 km2 in the Austrian Rhine Valley. Over the last 20 years a breeding success of 2.0 fledglings per breeding pair could not often be found in breeding areas of Lapwing populations of comparable size in Central Europe. There were several factors positively influencing the breeding success in our study area: Besides favourable weather conditions and a simple management of agricultural activities predation rate was probably low due to a mostly deadly virus disease (canine distemper) affecting foxes Vulpes vulpes and badgers Meles meles from autumn 2008 until 2010. Thus our study indicates that Northern Lapwings are able to breed successfully on arable land, even in the presence of high densities of avian predators (Carrion Crow Corvus corone, Common Buzzard Buteo buteo, Black Kite Milvus migrans and Red Kite M. milvus).
