Abstract
Indeed, not everything was better in the past. A reply to «Was everything better in the past? A review of changes in distributional area and population size of Swiss breeding birds 1950–2020.» This article scrutinises Martin Wegglerʼs (2023) extremely positive assessment of the distributional areas of Swiss birds since the 1950s and of the population sizes since 1990. The proportions of Swiss breeding bird species with positive and negative trends vary greatly in absolute and relative terms in Wegglerʼs various assessments. In particular, the very positive range balances are partly due to the much more accurate nationwide bird surveys of today compared to the past, but are also a consequence of the actual increase in rare breeding bird species since the 1950s and of the increase in populations of widespread species since 1990. The changes in the Swiss avifauna must be viewed from different angles with separate balances and cannot be expressed in a single overall balance. Furthermore, there is no scientific answer to the question what each bird species means to us. Balances always depend on the period under consideration. Most partial balances are positive. However, there are also neutral and negative partial balances. Since 1990, all trends and sub-indices have been positive or almost balanced. Climate change and an increase in (more) natural forest habitats as well as positive developments in the neighbouring countries are likely to be the main drivers of these trends. There are some apparent contradictions between the partial balances that should be examined more closely. Recently, the number of breeding bird species per square kilometre has increased; in the 100 km² atlas squares, however, it has remained stable despite an increase in the number of national breeding bird species.
