Illustration of a Northern Bald Ibis Geronticus eremita from the Jura Mountains from the 16th century. – In Central Europe, the original populations of the Northern Bald Ibis became extinct before the middle of the 17th century. This contribution presents a hitherto unknown illustration that indicates a previously unknown presence of this ibis species in the 16th century in the area of the Swiss-French Jura. The drawing is featured in an anthology of the New-York Historical Society. The existing correspondence of the persons involved at that time, Eskrich alias Pierre Cruche (painter), Benoît Textor (poet), Jacques Daléchamps (physician, naturalist), and their whereabouts indicate with great probability that the bird originates from the area around Geneva or the Swiss Jura Mountains in the vicinity of Neuchâtel.
