Abstract
Notes on a remarkable breeding season of Corn Buntings Emberiza calandra in the Aare plain near Solothurn In the Aare plain near Solothurn (cantons of Berne and Solothurn, Switzerland), the breeding population of Corn Buntings has decreased sharply since the 1980s. The species was absent as a breeding bird altogether from 2018 to 2020. Surprisingly, in 2022, eleven singing males were recorded. In five of the territories, a total of at least nine females were present, which built eleven nests. All nine females were observed feeding nestlings, and for six females, successful breeding was confirmed by the presence of fledged juveniles. A remarkable sex ratio was found in a territory claimed by a male in a hay
meadow near Selzach (canton of Solothurn). Here, four females were observed feeding their nestlings. Near Grenchen (canton of Solothurn), a nest with young was found in a European privet, 1.3 meters above ground. This is an unusual nesting site for this ground-breeding species.
