Abstract
A new record of Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax in Switzerland after 25 years. On 20 May 2021, a Little Bustard was observed and photographed in the plain of the river Linth. It is the first record in Switzerland in this century. The bird arrived from the west, landed in the protected area «Kaltbrunner Riet» (canton of St. Gallen) and stayed for only six minutes. It was identified as a bird hatched earlier than 2020. The birds sex stayed undetermined. Little Bustard is a species inhabiting grassland and farmland from northern Africa to southwestern China, but it strongly declined in the second half of the 20th century and disappeared from many countries. The main reasons for the decline in Europe are changes in land-use, intensification of agriculture and collision with powerlines. Currently some populations seem to expand slightly in areas with extensification of land-use. In Switzerland, the species was never reported as a breeding bird but has been a rare visitor with 44 records since 1900.
