Abstract
Conservation of the Wryneck Jynx torquilla in the vineyards around Lake Biel. In 2006, probably for the first time in decades, a Wryneck successfully nested in a nest box in the vineyards on Lake Biel. From 2008 onwards, we installed nest boxes on the 210 ha vineyard area to promote this species. The small parcelled study area is located on the south-east exposed slope at the foot of the first Jura chain along Lake Biel in the canton of Bern. It covers a 13 km long and 210 ha large strip between 440 and 600 m a.s.l., of which 186 ha are vineyards. The permanently vegetated vineyard soils are also home to many ants, the main food of the Wryneck during the breeding season. The nest boxes were checked 4 times during the breeding season and I made additional observations in the case of Wryneck broods. Between 2009 and 2021, the annual brood numbers gradually increased to 27; the population density was 9 pairs per km2 in 2021. Overall, 81.5 % of the 119 broods were successful. 34 % of the pairs made a second brood. Between 2016 and 2021, 6.1 young fledged per successful brood. If we omit the wet and cold breeding season of 2021 with only 4.7 young, fledging success averaged 6.7 young per successful brood. From 2016 to 2020, we ringed all nestlings and in subsequent years identified the ring numbers of feeding adults from photographs. Of 332 ringed and fledged nestlings, 23 returned to the area to breed, 4 had migrated westwards. Eight Wrynecks ringed elsewhere had migrated to the study area from the SW, from distances of 6 to 93 km. Between Lake Geneva and the canton of Neuchâtel, several independent conservation projects have recently been linked, so that there is now a continuous breeding population as far as Lake Biel. Immigration from this area has probably contributed most to the population increase on Lake Biel. The installation of nest boxes can therefore be successful if enough ants are available and there are other Wryneck populations nearby. For the conservation and promotion of biodiversity on vineyards, recommendations for effective measures, professional support for their implementation and an evaluation of their success are needed. Appropriate framework conditions and compensation should make the additional effort that winegrowers put in attractive.
