Abstract
Pressure from predators reduces breeding success of Eurasian Eagle-owls Bubo bubo. Using camera traps, Red Fox Vulpes vulpes, Badger Meles meles and Stone Marten Martes foina were captured repeatedly when visiting a nesting site of Eurasian Eagle-owls in the Kaiserstuhl region (Baden-Württemberg). Continuous IR-video camera recordings documented at least 40 severe threatening encounters from potential predators during the incubation period. With a forceful display of defensive postures the female Eagle-owl succeeded in rejecting all attacks, thus protecting herself, her clutch and chicks. The two chicks were raised to reach flight maturity. Likewise, in 2018, two chicks survived following predatory attacks by fox, badger and domestic cat on the incubating female, which were also video recorded. By contrast, two nestlings were lost in 2015 and again 2016, most likely to predators. In connection with the high predatory pressure, reproductive success in this breeding territory dropped to 0.67 fully fledged young per year for the years 2015 through 2020. Only by way of the continuous surveillance by IR-cameras did we gain access to, and knowledge of, the intense predatory pressure that Eagle-owls may be exposed to at their nest site.
