Abstract
Characterization of the mountainous habitat of the Garden Warbler Sylvia borin in the canton of Glarus. The Garden Warbler used to be a common breeding bird in open, shrub-rich areas in Switzerland. In the last 20 years, the population has declined markedly in the Swiss lowlands, but has remained stable in the mountainous regions. In this study, the habitat of the Garden Warbler in the alpine regions was described. 22 plots between 1200 and 2100 m a.s.l. with a combined area of 186 ha were studied in the years 2017–2019, holding a total of 301 territories of the Garden Warbler. The highest densities were found in areas with scattered shrubs (2.0 territories/ha) and riverine forests (2.9 territories/ha). The densities were lower in overgrown alder shrubs (0.6 territories/ha) and in woods (0.7 territories/ha). Of all the studied parameters, the length of the edge of the shrubs or woods per area was the factor that influenced the density of the Garden Warbler most clearly. The Garden Warbler seems to prefer areas where the shrubs border on meadows and where thus the foliage grows denser and offers an excellent habitat for insects, spiders and other prey. The Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca and to a lesser extent the Dunnock Prunella modularis also prefered areas with longer lengths of the edge of shrubs, whereas for the Eurasian Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla and the Common Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita, no such effect could be observed.
