Abstract
First overwintering of the Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca in Switzerland. In winter 2018/2019 the first successful wintering of a Lesser Whitethroat in Switzerland was documented. In Oberhelfenschwil (canton of St. Gallen) a bird in the 2nd calendar-year was observed at least between 3 January and 4 March 2019. There was only a short interruption of ten days without observations, after a stormy weekend. Previous late autumn and winter records in Switzerland date from November (three records) and December (two, including one record from 5 to 19 December 2011). In Central Europe, the nominate subspecies is usually found both during the breeding season and the migration period. There are also records of the subspecies blythi and in England of halimodendri. These eastern subspecies occur especially in late autumn and winter. However, the subspecies cannot be determined visually with certainty, which is why only a DNA analysis of the Swiss bird would have provided certainty of subspecies affiliation.
