Abstract
Exceptional brood events of Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus and Black Redstart P. ochruros. We describe and discuss three exceptional Redstart brood events from Northwestern Switzerland in 2018: (1) An early observation of a freshly fledged Black Redstart on 24 April, suggesting a start of egg laying between 17 and 24 March; normally, the first eggs are laid in mid-April in Central Europe and there are only slightly more than 10 documented observations of nesting behavior from the end of March in Switzerland, with the earliest laying date being from around 23 March 1952 so far. (2) Successful simultaneous broods of Common Redstart and Black Redstart at the edge of a high-stem orchard in the same apple tree with a distance of only about 1.5 m. (3) A second brood of Common Redstart with a clutch size of only two eggs. The smallest known clutch size so far was three eggs, with a mean clutch size of roughly six eggs in Northwestern Switzerland.
