Abstract
First record of Spanish Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis in Switzerland. On 14 December 2019, a male Spanish Sparrow in non-breeding plumage was photographed in a garden in Oberurnen (canton of Glarus). This is the first record of the species in Switzerland. Spanish Sparrow has expanded northwards in Europe since the 1980s along most of the northern boundary of the breeding area. In 2014, two broods of a pair were the first breeding record in Hungary. A total of 33 individuals from at least 46 individuals in nine countries have been observed in Europe outside the regular breeding area. Since 2009 the Spanish Sparrow has been recorded more frequently here. Most birds are detected in April and May, and to a lesser extent also in October and November.
