Abstract
Rare and unusual records of breeding bird species in Switzerland, 2019. For the first time, no territories of Grey Partridge Perdix perdix at all were found in Switzerland in 2019. One family each of Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna, Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca and Garganey Spatula querquedula were recorded and two of Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis. For the first time since 1981 Baillon’s Crake Zapornia pusilla bred. For the second time a pair of Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus incubated a clutch. Four pairs of Eurasian Dotterel Eudromias morinellus bred on the border to Italy. A Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago defended a territory and a pair of Mew Gull Larus canus made a breeding attempt. In the Grisons the Eurasian Scops-owl Otus scops bred successfully. A pair of Western Marsh-harrier Circus aeruginosus successfully raised chicks, after two broods in 2018. Two pairs of Short-toed Snake-eagle Circaetus gallicus bred in Valais, four pairs in Ticino. The European Bee-eater Merops apiaster reached with 159 pairs a new record. For the first time since 2001 three pairs of Zitting Cisticola Cisticola juncidis bred. At least one of two broods of Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans was successful. One territory each of Crested Lark Galerida cristata, Barred Warbler Sylvia nisoria and Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana were found and there were three territories of Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon and Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris. At least 20 territories of Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis in Ticino, four in Bregaglia and one in Northern Switzerland were recorded.
