Abstract
Rare and unusual records of breeding bird species in Switzerland, 2017. In the third mildest spring since 1864, the development of the vegetation started very early and precipitation was below the mean. The third mildest summer followed, with precipitation above the mean in the south. 2017 brought the fifth to eighth breeding records of Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus (two broods each in Valais and Ticino). For Eurasian Dotterel Charadrius morinellus, the ninth breeding record was reported. For Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna and Eurasian Teal Anas crecca, one family each was found, and three families for Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis. For the first time a mixed brood between Arctic Sterna paradisaea and Common Tern S. hirundo was observed. One brood of Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus, one territory of Baillon’s Crake Porzana pusilla, two of Zitting Cisticola Cisticola juncidis, one of River Warbler Locustella fluviatilis, one of Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon, and two each of Spectacled Warbler Sylvia conspicillata, Subalpine Warbler S. cantillans and Greenish Warbler Phylloscopus trochiloides were found. Common Pochard Aythya ferina (20 broods) and Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris (7 territories) reached record numbers and Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina (295 broods), Purple Heron Ardea purpurea (17 breeding attempts) and Little Crake Porzana parva (8 territories) had high numbers of breeding pairs. Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo (2312 nests), Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus (17 broods), Common Tern (799 breeding pairs) and European Bee-eater Merops apiaster (121 breeding pairs) continued to increase, whereas Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus (502 breeding pairs) still decreases. Among non-native species, for the first time a pair of Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis bred successfully, the number of breeding pairs of Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiaca doubled (25 broods) and for the first time a group of Vinous-throated Parrotbill Sinosuthora webbiana was observed.
