Abstract
Habitat and population of the Dunnock Prunella modularis in the canton of Glarus (Switzerland). In the canton of Glarus on the northern edge of the Swiss alps, 58 study plots with an area of 1 km2 each were searched for singing Dunnocks in 2015 and 2016. Of the total of 899 observed territories, 33 % were in coniferous forest, 8 % in broad-leaved forest, 11 % in mixed forest, 23 % at meadows or pastures with scattered trees, and 24 % in shrubs of alder Alnus viridis. Only 11 territories were found below 1000 m a.s.l. The highest densities were observed between 1350 and 1850 m, with a maximum of 33 territories in a single 1-km2 plot. Highest densities were 7.0 territories/10 ha in coniferous forest, 5.2 territories/10 ha in mixed forest, 4.5 territories/10 ha each in alder shrubs and broad-leaved forest, and 1.4 territories/10 ha at pastures. The estimated total population of Dunnocks in the canton of Glarus (685 km2) was 5200 to 6000 territories. Overall densities were thus higher than in similar regions like Vorarlberg and the Pays d’Enhaut, which may indicate that, for the Dunnock, the canton of Glarus offers particularly suitable conditions in forest habitats, topography, or climate.
