Abstract
Population trends of breeding birds in the agricultural area of Reinach (canton of Basel-Landschaft) from 1997 to 2016. We investigated the long-term impact of ecological compensation areas on the populations of breeding birds in an agricultural area covering 5.5 km2 between Aesch, Ettingen, Reinach and Therwil in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, where annual bird mapping has been carried out since 1997. The trends observed in this area largely corresponded to the nationwide trends for Switzerland, with the exception of the following species: The Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus population considerably decreased in the study area, whereas the nationwide trend seems to be slightly positive. The Grey-headed Woodpecker Picus canus population decreased, and there is no clear nationwide trend. The Eurasian Kestrel Falco tinnunculus population remained constant, but considerably increased in Switzerland. The Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella increased, but not in the whole of Switzerland, and the Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio increased, but decreased in Switzerland. For Yellowhammer, Red-backed Shrike and European Stonechat Saxicola rubicola we found a clear positive relationship between annual number of territories and total area of wildflower strips in the respective years. Our results show that the system of ecological compensation areas can lead to population increases of specialized farmland birds, provided that ecological compensation areas are chosen to benefit the particular target species. In our study area, wildflower strips had clear positive impacts. To create suitable conditions for as many farmland bird species as possible, wildflower strips should have several age stages and high structural diversity. Some wildflower strips should be maintained during a longer period than prescribed by law. In the study area, we found a strong decrease in bird species inhabiting orchards. Although the loss of high-stem fruit trees slowed down due to economical incentives, orchards have obviously lost part of their former habitat quality.
