Abstract
First capture of a Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni in Switzerland. On 30 August 2014, a first-year Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni was captured on the bird ringing station run by the Swiss Ornithological Institute at Col de Bretolet in the Alps (Valais, 1920 m a.s.l., 46°8’34”N/6°47’45”E). Characteristics crucial for its identification were wing length, length of tarsus and pale colouration of the claws. This represents the 14th record and the first capture of a Lesser Kestrel in Switzerland. In Europe, observations outside countries holding breeding populations are rare (56 records between 1980 and 2014). Summer movements in southern and southwestern Europe towards mountains and/or northern latitudes have been attributed to the exploitation of areas with high densities of orthopterans, the species’ main food, in order to satisfy high energy demands prior to autumn migration. The Bretolet record and a more recent record from 21 August 2015 at a similar altitude (2100 m a.s.l.) above Airolo (Ticino) may potentially indicate that Lesser Kestrels also reach the Swiss Alps in the context of the aforementioned movements.
