Rare birds and unusual observations in Switzerland in 2016. – In 2016, the Swiss Rarities Committee examined 354 reports of a total of 84 species, 251 (71 %) of which were accepted and 18 of which refer to past years. The highlights of 2016 were the first record of a wild Saker Falcon Falco cherrug and the second Franklin’s Gull Larus pipixan. It was the 2nd best year ever for Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus with 8 records, as well as an autumn record year for Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga (4), Zitting Cisticola Cisticola juncidis (7) and Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus (25). Spring influxes of Calandra Lark Melanocorypha calandra (3), Red-rumped Swallow Cecropis daurica (11), Yellow Wagtail showing characters of the subspecies Motacilla flava flavissima or M. f. lutea (8), Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola (3), Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis (17) and Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans (39) were recorded, with the 5th breeding record of the latter species and the 2nd record of the Balkan subspecies S. c. albistriata. A supplement from 2013 concerns the first record of a Lesser Black-backed Gull of the subspecies Larus fuscus graellsii (ring recovery). At the end of 2016, the Swiss list comprised 413 species in categories A, B (birds of wild origin) and C (introduced species), 406 of which have been recorded since 1900. Nine species of uncertain origin remain in category D (doubtful origin). In the text, the three figures after the German and scientific names refer to the number of records/individuals, 1900–1991, 1992–2015 and in 2016, respectively. The species are listed systematically, and within species records are listed in alphabetic order of cantons and by date. Detailed information is given as follows: location, date(s), number of individuals (one individual if not specified), age and sex if known, available documentation (photographs, video, audio recordings, skins) and in brackets the name(s) of the observer(s).
