Abstract
First record of Iberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus in Switzerland. On 22 April 2010, a singing Iberian Chiffchaff was observed in Wallbach (canton of Aargau) at 287 m a.s.l. near the Swiss-German border. The bird subsequently stayed in the same area until 11 May 2010. Its identification was mainly based on the recorded advertising song, while no calls were heard in the field. The song was always shorter than 4 s, consisted of two or three phrases with varying speeds and rhythm and contained typical upwards inflected syllables, thereby meeting the criteria defined by Collinson & Melling (2008) except for a minority of syllables reaching frequencies above 7 kHz. Subtle plumage and structural features of the bird fully supported the identification as Iberian Chiffchaff. The first record of this species in Switzerland closely fits the phenology of vagrant Iberian Chiffchaff in Central and Northern Europe reviewed in this article and fell into a record year with 20 more records across Europe outside countries with breeding populations.
