Strong disturbance of waterbirds caused by fireworks. – Since several years up to five fireworks per year have been displayed on the island of Mainau at Lake Constance close to an internationally important waterbird conservation area. The pyrotechnics were displayed during the breeding, moulting and migration seasons of waterbirds. In this study, the waterbirds were counted before, during (with night vision glasses) and after a two-part firework display, which was conducted on 13 September in 2010. It caused severe flight reactions of all waterbird species, especially Red-crested and Common Pochards, Eurasian Coots, Great Crested Grebes und Mute Swans. During the fireworks, over 4000 waterbirds disappeared from the area within a few minutes. The effects seem to be strongest in the breeding season and during wing moult. Even two days after the fireworks the number of wing-moulting and thus flightless Great Crested Grebes was reduced, as were the numbers of resting waterbirds. The disturbance of waterbirds caused by fireworks is considerable and is not compatible with the conservation aims of an EU Special Protection Area. As the importance of the moulting area seemed to be lowered, the fireworks were stopped after this study in 2010. Since then, the number of wing-moulting Red-crested Pochards seems to increase. Fireworks close to bird-rich areas should be banned – especially during breeding and wing-moult.
