Abstract
Rare birds and unusual observations in Switzerland in 2014. In 2014, the Swiss Rarities Committee examined 276 reports of a total of 86 species, 202 (73 %) of which were accepted and 25 of which refer to past years. The highlights of 2014 were the 2nd and 3rd records of Iberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus for Switzerland, the 2nd to 4th records of Greenish Warbler Phylloscopus trochiloides and the 6th record of Blue-winged Teal Anas discors. In addition, the first breeding attempts of Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea, the 3rd breeding involving a Yellow Wagtail with the characters of the subspecies Motacilla flava flavissima or lutea and the 4th breeding of Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans were recorded. The year 2014 saw remarkable influxes of Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus (11 individuals), European Roller Coracias garrulus (4 individuals) and in particular a record influx of Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus (25 individuals), almost doubling the total number of Swiss records so far. For the first time, the Swiss Rarities Committee accepted records based on location data from birds equipped with satellite transmitters lacking direct field observations (Lesser Spotted Eagle Aquila pomarina). Additional notable records from 2012 were the 4th record of a Lesser Black-backed Gull with characters of the subspecies Larus fuscus fuscus and the 5th record of Common Redpoll Carduelis flammea.
At the end of 2014, the Swiss list comprised 411 species in categories A, B (birds of wild origin) and C (introduced species), 404 of which have been recorded since 1900. Nine species remain in category D (doubtful origin). In the text, the three figures after the German and scientific names refer to the number of records/individuals, 1900–1991, 1992–2013 and in 2014, respectively. The species are listed systematically, and within species records are listed in alphabetic order of cantons and by date. Detailed information is given as follows: location, date(s), number of individuals (one individual if not specified), age and sex if known, available documentation (photographs, video, audio recordings, skins) and in brackets the name(s) of the observer(s).
