Abstract
Flight directions and spatial distribution of nocturnal bird migration across the Eastern Alps: a moon-watching survey. Using the moon-watching method – with direct observation of bird migration towards the full moon – we managed for the first time to gather large-scale data of nocturnal migration in the area of the Eastern Alps. In spring and autumn 2005–2007 observations were made in Austria, but concentrated on the region east of 13 °E. The results of 178 autumn-nights and 216 spring-nights (with a total of 6888 targets observed) showed a main flow of migrants with mean directions around SSW. To the north of the Alps a stream with westerly directions follows the E–W-direction of the Alpine edge. This stream is expected to increase towards West. Additional slight deviations of the directional distributions along the eastern and southern border of the Alps occur. The hypothesized SE migration for regions east of about 12° E was mainly confined to the East of the territory and prominent only in August. Generally, about 8 % of autumn migration is directed towards SSE in the eastern regions; towards West and South the percentage decreases. Spring migration to the north of the Alps is slightly shifted towards East and weaker than in autumn. Spring migration in the tiny southern region is weak. There is an increased anticlockwise shifting migration in the regions «East South» and «East North».
