Abstract
Population size and distribution of the Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis in the canton of Glarus (Switzerland) 2004–2013 compared to 2002–2003. From 2004 to 2013 singing males of the Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis were mapped in the canton of Glarus and the results compared with the data of the years 2002–2003. Altogether 379 territories could be identified. As in 2002–2003, the lower regions of the canton below 900 m a.s.l. were barely occupied. In some mountainous regions with pastures or meadows the species reaches remarkable densities of more than 2.5 territories per 10 ha. The altitudinal distribution of the territories was similar to those in 2002–2003. The territories between 1300 and 1600 m were regularly occupied, whereas those below 1200 m and less so above 1600 m were not occupied every year. The lower regions were occupied especially when snowmelt occurred late in the season. The total number of singing males does not seem to have changed markedly since 2002–2003 but it differs markedly from year to year depending upon the timing of snowmelt.
