Abstract
Nestling diet of Bonelli’s Warbler Phylloscopus bonelli. In the Staz Forest (Upper Engadine Valley, Grisons), nestling diet of a pair of Bonelli's Warbler at 1780 m a.s.l. was recorded by photographs in 216 feeding events. 74 % of all food items (n = 334) were winged insects, most of them hoverflies (Syrphidae). Adults transported 1.5 prey items per feeding visit, 5 prey items at maximum per trip (Table 1). Feeding rate was highest in the early morning with 12 feeding visits per 15 min and declined during the day to about 5 feedings per 15 min (Fig. 5). Adults flew up to 110 m to distant feeding grounds and regularly crossed at least 60 m of free ground in non-stop flights (Fig. 1).
