Abstract
Rare birds and unusual observations in Switzerland in 2011. In 2011, the Swiss Rarities Committee examined 399 reports of a total of 96 species, 234 (59 %) of which were accepted and 44 of which refer to past years. The highlights of 2011 included the first records of Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus, Eleonora’s Falcon Falco eleonorae, and Bimaculated Lark Melanocorypha bimaculata, unusual numbers of Roughlegs Buteo lagopus and Calandra Larks Melanocorypha calandra, the overwintering of a Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus and of a Black Kite Milvus migrans, and a prolonged winter stay of a Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus. In addition, 2011 saw the 3rd to 5th record of Common Chiffchaffs with the characteristics of Phylloscopus collybita tristis, the 9th observations of Lesser Spotted Eagle Aquila pomarina, White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala and Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima since 1900, the 9th Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites subruficollis, the 2nd Western Orphean Warbler Sylvia hortensis since 1994, and the 9th and 10th records of Spectacled Warbler S. conspicillata. It was also a very good year for Short-toed Snake-Eagle Circaetus gallicus (22 records), Pallid Harrier (5 records), Great Snipe Gallinago media (5 records), and Long-tailed Jaeger Stercorarius longicaudus (7 records of 14 individuals). At the end of 2011, the Swiss list comprised 407 species in categories A, B (birds of wild origin) and C (introduced species), 399 of which have been recorded since 1900. Nine species of uncertain origin remain in category D (doubtful origin). In the text, the three figures after the German and scientific names refer to the number of records/individuals, 1900–1991, 1992–2010 and in 2011, respectively. The species are listed systematically, and, within species, records are listed in alphabetic order of cantons and by date. Detailed information is given as follows: location, date(s), number of individuals (one individual if not specified), age and sex if known, available documentation.
