Abstract
Alpine Swift Apus melba breeding in Lindau (Bavaria) since 2005. In summer 2005 the first Alpine Swift Apus melba bred successfully in a school building in Lindau (Lake Constance). It is the first breeding record of this species in Bavaria. In the following years 2006–2010 no more than one or two pairs were breeding in Lindau. Due to the restoration of the former school building in 2010/11 extensive conservation measures were necessary to keep Alpine Swift as a breeding bird in Bavaria. However, the newly built substitute cavities have not yet been accepted. Instead, the swifts changed their breeding site and nested in the old lighthouse of Lindau. In order to support the only occurrence of Alpine Swift in Bavaria further nesting sites will be provided until spring 2012.
