Abstract
Radar technology applied to the study of seabird migration across the Strait of Gibraltar. A combination of radar and visual observations is used to test the informative power of both methods when studying seabird migration occurring at very low levels above the sea surface. Besides the lack of information on species, the detection of birds on the radar screen is limited by disturbing echoes from the waves, which increase with wind force. On the other hand radar can complement visual observations by providing exact distances and information on flight behaviour. Applied in combination, the two methods provided estimates of the Mediterranean populations of endangered species (Cory's and Balearic Shearwater), and allowed to study flight behaviour with respect to the coast and wind conditions. This information was implemented for the development of a model to assess the collision risk of seabirds with off-shore wind parks.
