Abstract
Early experimental measurements of gaseous metabolism in animals: The dissertation of Carl Ludwig von Erlach «Versuche über die Perspiration einiger mit Lungen athmender Wirbelthiere» from the year 1846. In the year 1846 Carl Ludwig von Erlach from Bern (Switzerland) wrote a dissertation with the title «Versuche über die Perspiration einiger mit Lungen athmender Wirbelthiere» (Experiments on the breathing of some lung-breathing vertebrates). This paper presumably presents some of the first known serious experimental data of the gaseous metabolism of animals but was not considered (presumably because it was unknown) up to now in scientific literature. Von Erlach measured by phosphor- and carbonate-eudiometers gravimetrically oxygen intake and carbon dioxide production in the following animals: frog Rana sp., dove Columba livia f. domestica, hens of different age Gallus domesticus, cat Felis silvestris f. catus, mouse Mus musculus, rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus f. domesticus, differently-aged guinea pigs Cavia porcellus, Eurasian red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris and dog Canis lupus familiaris. The obtained results are – considering the difficult measuring method – within a realistic range and presumably represent the first comprehensible data of gaseous metabolism in animals at all. In this paper the experimental settings and the process of the analysis are described in detail including the discussion of the obtained results.
