Abstract
Migration and population trend of Common Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos in the Aare plain near Solothurn, Switzerland. The breeding population of Common Nightingales in a area of 32 km2 on the Swiss Plateau was monitored from 1982 to 2008. Median arrival date in spring was 19 April. Arrival date in the second half of the study period was 6 days earlier than in the first half. Song activity of males declined markedly after 5 June and stopped at the beginning of July. Overall, 317 Nightingale territories were found, with an average of 11.7 territories per year. The population increased in the study period. The yearly fluctuation of the population was on average 32 %. The 317 territories were distributed over 27 different breeding sites, of which on average 6.2 sites were occupied each year. Only 3 sites were occupied in more than 15 years. Density was highest in an oxbow area near Grenchen, where up to 8 territories were found in an area of 4.8 ha, with the highest concentration (5 territories/1.2 ha) in an area with many neophytes.
