Abstract
Gustav von Burg (1871–1927): biographical notes. The article describes the merits of Gustav von Burg as ornithologist, hunter, specialist for small mammals, teacher and promoter of health insurance. Besides his work as teacher Gustav von Burg was a very active researcher and journalist. He opposed himself in public to the attack of Belgium by the German army in the first world war. As a fighter by nature he was in involved in a number of court cases. Several aspects of von Burg’s life that concern ornithology in Switzerland are described and commented: Von Burg as editor of the Catalogue of Swiss birds and as a member of the Federal Ornithological Committee; as first president of the Swiss Society for the Study and Conservation of Birds (later Ala) and co-editor of its journal «Der Ornithologische Beobachter»; the conflict between the Society and the Federal Committee; the nature reserve Bölchen-Lauch, the study of small mammals in the Swiss National Park; the study of bird migration and of morphological differences at subspecies level.
