Abstract
Ornithology – a predominantly male interest. In the hundred-year history of the Ala, Swiss Society for the Study and Conservation of Birds, and in the history of ornithology in general, active women have been in the minority. In the Ala, it was Julie Schinz who made the most outstanding contribution, in particular with her documentation of the birds of the Neeracherried and her efforts to protect this important wetland. Among the over 1200 first authors contributing to the Ala’s journal «Der Ornithologische Beobachter» only about 40 women are found. At the end of 2008, women made up 19 % of all Ala members. Over the last twenty years this percentage has been increasing. The growing interest of women in ornithology is also reflected by the growing number of women participating in training courses of SVS/BirdLife Switzerland, where half the participants in recent years were women.
