Abstract
The journal «Der Ornithologische Beobachter» as a platform for the Ala, Swiss Society for the Study and Conservation of Birds. Until 1850, biology had not been more than a part of medical research and ornithology was established as a special discipline only around 1920. In 1902 «Der Ornithologische Beobachter» (OB) as a journal and, a few years later (1909), the Ala, Swiss Society for the Study and Conservation of Birds, were founded. In the over 100 years of its existence, the OB has evolved from a news magazine to a scientific journal. During this process the articles became longer and, at the same time, were authored by research teams rather than by single persons. Many authors proved loyal to their journal and provided numerous publications over long periods. On the other hand the journal is continually refreshed by authors publishing for the first time. The OB covers all important developments of the bird fauna in Switzerland and Central Europe over the century, in particular changes in species distribution, appearance and disappearance of species, and population trends. The documentation of changes and conservation of birds and their environment have always been important topics. In this sense, the OB is an impressive example of cooperation between ornithologists from all backgrounds and disciplines.
