Abstract
Bill malformation in a Blue Tit Parus caeruleus. A Blue Tit with an extreme overgrowth of the bill that resulted in a by 1.5 cm elongated and hence crossed upper and lower mandible, was regularly observed in February 2004 at a bird table in northern Switzerland. In spite of this handicap, the bird managed to survive the winter. This Blue Tit also had a dirty plumage, as well as three other Blue Tits and a Great Tit with similar bill malformation in the collection of the Natural History Museum Basel. Therefore, an increased mortality of individuals with bill malformation may not only result from a reduced foraging ability but also from a reduced preening ability.
