Abstract
The Swiss Action Plan for the Western Capercaillie: a national strategy for the protection and conservation of the Capercaillie in Switzerland. The Swiss Action Plan for the Western Capercaillie describes the national strategy for the protection and conservation of this grouse species in Switzerland. The goals, the main measures, organisation and financial framework are defined. The focus on priority areas for conservation, the protection of areas with current local populations and the improvement of areas with a high ecological potential for Capercaillie are the central elements of the implementation. Therefore, forestry measures necessary to improve habitat quality and measures to protect the habitats against the effects of human disturbance are recommended for concrete projects. The action plan also proposes a concept to monitor the effects of conservation measures for the abundance and habitat of Capercaillie. The description of open research questions for effective conservation and the division of tasks and responsibilities among federal and cantonal authorities are further elements of the action plan. It also wants to increase public awareness and should be revised periodically according to the experiences in the preceding implementation period.
