Abstract
Conservation biology of Western Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus in Switzerland: an overview. The Western Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus is a large forest grouse with narrow habitat preferences and large home ranges. As Capercaillie populations are declining in most of their central European range and the species has been shown to be an umbrella for high species richness, a profound knowledge of the species’ ecology is essential for the conservation of the charismatic bird. This issue of «Der Ornithologische Beobachter» presents the main results of Capercaillie research that has been conducted in Switzerland during the last nine years. Several institutes were involved in these studies, the leading ones being: the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL, the Swiss Ornithological Institute and the University of Lausanne. This article provides the historic background information on changes of Capercaillie habitat and population development, refers to former research activities and describes our concepts and motivations to provide new insights into Capercaillie ecology that might guide decisions in Capercaillie conservation.
