Abstract
Rare and unusual records of breeding, migrating and wintering bird species in Switzerland, 2006. A small influx of Bohemian Waxwings Bombycilla garrulus was noted at the end of the winter 2005/06. Waterbirds stayed longer than usual due to the harsh winter conditions that lasted until March 2006, which also blocked the passage of Northern Lapwings Vanellus vanellus and other migrants. Melting snow and more rain in April produced good stopover sites for waders and gulls in flooded fields. The Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva and the White-spotted Bluethroat Luscinia svecica cyanecula both bred for the second time, the Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans for the third time and both the Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna and the Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator for the 6th time. For the first time, a Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus produced hybrid chicks with a Yellow-legged Gull L. michahellis. Also for the first time, the Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator did not breed at all. Unprecedented was the oversummering of a Common Crane Grus grus. An influx of Griffon Vultures Gyps fulvus was noted for the second year running. The autumn 2006 was the warmest on record and the winter 2006/07 was very mild. An invasion of Bramblings Fringilla montifringilla took place in December. «Northern» Bullfinches Pyrrhula pyrrhula were noted again for the third winter running but in decreasing numbers. Unusual winter stayers included a Black Stork Ciconia nigra, a Common Crane, 1–2 Western Marsh Harriers Circus aeruginosus and several Ring Ouzels Turdus torquatus.
