Abstract
Rare birds and unusual observations in Switzerland in 2006. In 2006 the Swiss Rarities Committee examined 219 reports of a total of 82 species, 36 of which refer to past years. 195 reports (89 %) were accepted. The highlights of 2006 included the 1st records of Franklin’s Gull Larus pipixcan, Radde’s Warbler Phylloscopus schwarzi and Isabelline Shrike Lanius isabellinus. After the 1st record from 2005, the second Laughing Gull Larus atricilla appeared already in 2006. The Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva bred for the second time in Switzerland and the Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans for the third time. Additionally, the 4th observations for both the Black-winged Kite Elanus caeruleus and the Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima were noteworthy. An unprecedented invasion of Griffon Vultures Gyps fulvus occurred again after 2005. Unexpected observations were the 5th autumn record of the critically endangered Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius and the 1st Orphean Warbler Sylvia hortensis since 1994.
At the end of 2006, the Swiss list comprised 398 species in categories A, B (birds of wild origin) and C (introduced species), 390 of which have been recorded since 1900. Nine species of uncertain origin remain in category D (doubtful origin). In the text, the three figures after the German and scientific names refer to the number of records/individuals, 1900–1991, 1992–2005 and in 2006, respectively. The species are listed systematically, and within species records are listed in alphabetic order of cantons and by date. Detailed information is given as follows: location, date(s), number of individuals (one individual if not specified), age and sex if known, available documentation (photographs, video, skins) and in brackets the name(s) of the observer(s).
