Abstract
Ferruginous Ducks Aythya nyroca at the small lakes in the Seebach valley (Nussbaumer-, Hüttwiler- and Hasensee), canton of Thurgau. Since 2004, Ferruginous Ducks Aythya nyroca have been observed regularly on the three lakes in the Seebach valley. In winter 2004/05 a maximum of
7 individuals were observed, in 2005/06 18 individuals and 2005/06 11 individuals. Ferruginous Ducks were mostly present between September an March, in 2006 already from 16 July. Males dominated during the period of body moult (end of August to November) as well as in winter. Ferruginous Ducks were often observed alone but sometimes formed groups of up to 9 individuals. They hardly associated with other species of ducks. Ferruginous Ducks were mostly observed in reedbeds or other vegetated parts of the shores offering cover, and dived close to the shore. In 2005 and 2006, numbers of Ferruginous Ducks on the three lakes accounted for about 20 % of the maximum numbers observed per decade in the whole of Switzerland, indicating the importance of the site for this species.
