Abstract
Population trend and migration of the Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus in the Aare plain near Solothurn. In the cultivated area of the Aare plain near Solothurn (Switzerland) Northern Lapwings started to breed in 1962. The farmland population grew very fast, and in 1970 the maximum number of 140 breeding pairs were counted. At that time, the Lapwing colony in the Aare plain was the largest one in Switzerland. From the mid-1980s, the population declined rapidly, and in 1999 Lapwings were recorded breeding for the last time. Surprisingly, Lapwings stayed longest in a heavily disturbed area at the western border of Solothurn. Breeding success was very low due to intensive farming practices. As in other parts of Europe, the Lapwing population in the Aare plain was sustained by immigration from other regions, which acted as source populations Numbers of migranting Lapwing also declined markedly from 1981 to 2006. Dayly totals of more than 100 individuals were observed more often in the first half of the study period. Lapwing numbers are lower both during spring and autumn migration, though the number of five-day periods with flooding of parts of the Aare plain was stable during the observation period. The recolonisation of the Aare plain seems possible, but to enhance the survival of the young, shallow depressions have to be created.
