Abstract
Seasonal and daily occurrence of passerines on autumn migration in the Jura mountains (Ulmethöchi, northern Switzerland). We present the seasonal and diurnal pattern of the number of migrants at Ulmethöchi (Canton Basel-Landschaft) for 33 passerine bird species based on data from 18 years (1988–2005). The numbers of migrants were assessed by catching migrating birds in mist nets (25 species) and/or by standardised visual observation (15 species). The seasonal migration pattern based on visual observation and mist netting data correlated well. On the other hand, the two methods produced different diurnal activity patterns for the Serin Serinus serinus, Eurasian Siskin Carduelis spinus and the European Goldfinch C. carduelis: Mist netting showed a later peak than visual observations. Possibly, these diurnal migrants fly higher early in the morning compared to later in the day or the condition for the visual observations became worse over the day.
Though local weather strongly affected the daily number of migrants, it had no effect on the seasonal and diurnal migration pattern averaged over 18 years.
The seasonal migration patterns corresponded well to the migration pattern observed in the Alps (Col de Bretolet), in the Swiss lowlands and at Lake Constance (Mettnau) except for 7 species (Firecrest Regulus ignicapilla, Blue Tit Parus caeruleus, Brambling Fringilla montifringilla, Greenfinch Carduelis chloris, European Goldfinch, Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula and Hawfinch Coccothraustes coccothraustes). The migration peaks of these species were earlier at Col de Bretolet than at Ulmethöchi. This might be due to the birds avoiding crossing the Alps later in the year.
For 13 species, seasonal changes in sex ratio and/or age composition were analysed. The proportion of males significantly increased during the season in the Goldcrest Regulus regulus, Common Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs and Hawfinch. The proportion of first year birds decreased significantly over the season in the European Robin Erithacus rubecula, Black Redstart Phoenicurus ochruros, European Goldfinch and Eurasian Siskin. Flock sizes are described for 15 species.
