Abstract
Courtship feeding, diet and hoarding behaviour of Marsh Tits Parus palustris. Large numbers of Marsh Tits in the forest of Allschwil near Basel (Switzerland) were colour-ringed in the years 1949 to 1952. Here, I present observations on courtship feeding, data on the diet and observations on collecting and hoarding of food. Searching of nest holes and mate feeding are important behaviour elements at the beginning of the breeding period. The frequency of begging calls of females and of feeding by the male differs between individuals. If males did not feed their mate or fed her too rarely, no brood was started.
Marsh Tits eat a lot of small seeds, but a large part of their diet consists of insects, even in winter. They collect little insects, their eggs and larvae, searching for their hiding-places in the bark. During the whole year, seeds of nearly all plant species present are collected and hoarded. The seeds of the common hemp-nettle Galeopsis tetrahit are preferred from August to mid-October.
