Abstract
Changes in spring arrival of some migratory bird species in the region of Solothurn, Switzerland. From 1981 to 2006 the date of first arrival in spring in the region of Solothurn (Swiss Plateau) was studied for four short-distance and eight long-distance (trans-Sahara) migrants. Two data sets were used: (a) the total of records from different observers, and (b) records from personal observations gathered during visits 3 to 4 times per week. As expected, the median of first arrival dates for species with many records from other observers was slightly earlier in the complete dataset. Changes in first arrival date were analysed on the basis of the personal observations only, because for this dataset observer effort was kept constant over time. One short-distance and four long-distance migrants showed a significant change towards earlier arrival when comparing the periods 1981–1993 and 1994–2006. Median date of first arrival was 8 days earlier for Barn Swallow, 5 days for Eurasian Reed Warbler, 10 days for Eurasian Blackcap, 1 day for Garden Warbler, and 8 days for Willow Warbler. All other species (Common Nightingale, Black Redstart, Whinchat, Common Grasshopper Warbler, Common Chiffchaff, Firecrest and Ortolan Bunting) showed a non-significant tendency towards earlier arrival. For Black Redstart, Eurasian Blackcap, Common Chiffchaff, Firecrest and Barn Swallow a positive correlation was found between date of first arrival and mean air temperature in February/March. A temperature difference of plus 1 °C corresponded to 1–4 days earlier arrival, depending on the species.
