Abstract
Population trend and breeding success of Common Sandpipers Actitis hypoleucos breeding along Bavarian rivers and effects of conservation measures. 17 to 20 % of the estimated 150 to 180 breeding pairs of Common Sandpipers in Bavaria breed along the Upper Isar and the Ammer rivers. Between 1996 and 2005 the number of breeding pairs, reproductive success and conservation measures were monitored and evaluated. The number of breeding pairs at the Ammer (1996–2005) declined significantly since 1999. The number of breeding pairs at the Isar (1996 and 1999–2005) showed no change. Both developments cannot be explained by reproductive success. The fluctuations in the two populations were not correlated over a period of eight years with a complete dataset, and there was no evidence for an exchange of birds between the two rivers.
Protected areas at the Ammer (e.g. fenced with plastic bands) were mainly avoided by visitors, but neither the number of pairs nor breeding success increased in the period with (2002–2005) compared to the period without protection measures (1996–2001). As reproductive success at the neighbouring river Isar, where pressure by human recreation is higher, was lower, we conclude that the number of fledglings at the Ammer is less influenced by recreational disturbance. Explanations for the development at the Ammer might be the specific settlement patterns and the change of habitat conditions. This emphasizes the protection of the existing habitats and the creation of new habitats by river restoration measures.
