Abstract
Successful winter breeding record of the Dipper Cinclus cinclus in the town of Berne (Switzerland). On 1 February 2005 a freshly fledged Dipper was observed at the river Aare in the town of Berne at 500 m a.s.l. Egg laying of this winter brood was calculated to have started on 19 December 2004 and was thus five weeks in advance of the earliest known breeding records in Switzerland. Different factors like food availability, weather, water temperature, nest site in an urban environment and day length could have been responsible for or favoured this early brood. This observation is a further indication of the suspected advancement of the breeding phenology of the Dipper, which might also be connected with the human-induced climate change.
