Abstract
Year-round surveys of birds in a small wetland in Switzerland 1983–2004. For 22 years weekly surveys of birds were carried out in a small oxbow lake (total area 5 ha) near Grenchen in the Aare plain (Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland). During each thirty-minute survey all individuals of all species were recorded. Birds on the ground («users») were distinguished from individuals only recorded flying («overflyers»). Overall, 165 bird species were recorded, on average 19.7 species per visit (16.0 users, 3.7 overflyers). Mean species richness was highest during spring and autumn migration and lowest in winter and during the breeding season. Eight species reached a monthly presence (calculated as a percentage of the counts lying in the middle of each of the 264 months) of more than 50 %, Blackbird (93 %), Yellowhammer and Carrion Crow (89 % each) being the most frequent. Calculated from the monthly presence, 10 out of the 40 most frequent species recorded as users showed a significant decline, 7 an increase. Among the winners were species relying on bushes and trees. The numbers of individuals of user species was influenced by flocking species. Without Tree Sparrow and Common Starling 55 individuals were recorded on average per visit, with a minimum in winter and a maximum during autumn migration. Several weather factors, recorded at the start of each visit, affected the number of species recorded. The number of overflyers was correlated negatively with fog and precipitation, the number of both overflyers and users negatively with strong winds. The oxbow lake is the only significant wetland in the agricultural area of the Aare plain and a locally important stop-over site, in particular for dabbling ducks and waders, which also use the adjacent fields during periods of flooding.
