Abstract
First breeding record of the Three-toed Woodpecker Picoides tridactylus in the Canton of Zurich, Swiss Plateau. A breeding pair of the Three-toed Woodpecker was recorded from mid-April until the end of June 2005 in the hilly region in the east of the Canton of Zurich, c. 22 km from the next breeding site in the northern Prealps. The drumming place was situated on a ridge at 922 m a.s.l. and consisted of a group of dead and partly broken conifers within a mixed forest dominated by Norway spruce. The nest hole was found in closed forest on a slope at 780 m a.s.l. in a spruce tree at a height of 6–6.5 m, c. 350 m from the drumming place. On 29 June the nest contained only one nearly fledged nestling. So far, this is the lowest breeding site recorded for the Three-toed Woodpecker in Switzerland.
