Abstract
Population trends of regular breeding birds in Switzerland 1990–2004. Population trends are presented for regular breeding birds with a population size of at least 50 breeding pairs. Population indices were calculated on the basis of results from different monitoring programmes, mainly the common breeding bird monitoring programme and the monitoring programme for rare species, which collects observations in a semi-standardised way. Population trends were calculated for the fifteen-year period 1990 to 2004 and for the five-year period 2000 to 2004. 87 (58 %) of a total of 151 evaluated species showed a significant trend for the fifteen-year and/or the five-year period: 46 species increased over 15 years and 24 decreased. The group of species showing a decrease in both periods contains mainly species that winter south of the Sahara and at the same time experience habitat loss in the breeding range. Several species considered threatened and near-threatened on the 2001 Swiss Red List continued to decline during the last five years, in particular Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus, Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus, Whinchat Saxicola rubetra and Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus. The species with the strongest increases, Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina, Yellow-legged Gull Larus cachinnans and Rook Corvus frugilegus, colonised Switzerland only in the course of the 20th century.
