Abstract
Large winter groups and early displaying behaviour of Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus. In their northern distribution range, Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus are known to aggregate in winter groups, which are usually separeted by sex. Large winter groups are rare, even in areas with high densities. Early displaying behaviour usually starts in March, depending on weather conditions. Single singing males can be observed even earlier. In the southern Black Forest (Germany) we observed a winter group of minimum seven individuals consisting of males and females on 3 February, together with a single singing male. In the Swiss Alps and Jura mountains we observed displaying males and females during mild weather conditions even in the middle of the winter.
