Abstract
When and where do Ferruginous Ducks Aythya nyroca moult their wing feathers? Observations on moulting sites, timing and duration of wing moult of Ferruginous Ducks at Ägelsee (northeastern Switzerland) and Untersee (Lake Constance) were consistent with information published in handbooks. Ducks were unable to fly from the first half of July until mid-/end of August. They were moulting singly at or close to their breeding sites. On Mindelsee (north of Untersee, Germany), where in recent years groups of up to 94 Ferruginous Ducks have been observed between end of August and October, birds gather only to moult their body feathers. Earlier published statements on the importance of Mindelsee as a moulting site have to be corrected.
